About Extract a Substring
Positions count from 1, so a start of 1 with a length of 10 takes the first ten characters. Applied per line, this is the quickest way to pull a fixed-width column out of a log or a report - a date stamp, a record ID, a status code.
A start beyond the end of a line gives an empty result for that line rather than an error, so ragged input still produces one output row per input row.
